Mahatma Ghandi Blues: Tuesday, November 3rd!

We have probed the earth, excavated it, burned it, ripped things from it, buried things in it, chopped down its forests, leveled its hills, muddied its waters, and dirtied its air. That does not fit my definition of a good tenant. If we were here on a month-to-month basis, we would have been evicted long ago. -Rose Bird, Chief Justice of California Supreme Court (2 Nov 1936-1999)

Hello from Nanoose! Hope you are enjoying India. Just a quick note to recap my surgery (ies). Worst part was getting a nasty GI Flu for a couple of days when I got home-sure glad that is behind me! They are no fun at any time, but after major surgery-yikes!! All is well-aiming to walk a good 5K today-will continue to rehab as quickly as possible. Keep us posted from India. Cheers, Gregg & Francesca

Aloha, Here is a quick recap of my fun in Nanaimo..The surgery went as well as could be, and I recovered (still am!) faster than they have ever seen.Normally a week or 2 following this surgery in hospital- i was about to go home on Friday (after 4 days). They discovered that a piece of the drain had accidentally been sewn into the abdomin (after several nurses/doctor yanked as hard as they could until it snapped), and I was suddenly back in surgery on Friday night at 8:00PM, out with a full anisthetic, and another surgery to remove the drain. Then, restaple etc, and off to recovery. I was still going to get out of there (no matter what), and came home Saturday (the morning after!). Feeling very tired and sore, but on the mend and already walked a couple of kilometres each day ( a bit less on Saturday!) Getting better each day-delivered coffee & juice to Francesca’s bedside early AM, since she is having to do almost everything else so far…No gym yet, but lots of walking until I can start to train again-probably a few weeks to be careful, and do the proper rehab-lot’s of risks if you are not careful, ie hernias etc…Will talk soon-oh yeah, the wine tastes great after my 1 week cleanse in the hospital…Cheers, Gregg

Hi Grog!

Great to hear that you are on the road to recovery after the fairly "rocky" start, to say the least. Cannot even imagine how frustrated you must have felt. Biy like playing doubles with Ragin'! Anyway, delighted that you seem to be recovering so well. Keep up the good work! Onward!! Fight!!!

Terrific that you are able to enjoy wine again. We had some not bad local plonk in Pondicherry, (grown and made from further north, I believe.), a few days ago, a Viognier and a Sauvignon Blanc. Liked the latter better but Mme Coriandre was partial to former. She must have been as she drank most of the bottle! Knock it back, Cora Lee! Hope to have one of our guides take us to a hootch shop, at some point, to do a bit of scopage.

If you received my last two messages you will note that I didn't include any shots from inside the temple we visited yesterday. No cameras allowed. One even goes through a security screening, much like at airports but probably not quite as thorough, although both Cora Lee and Lynne had to be "patted" down, in a booth, by a female officer. [Took a fair bit of time and there was quite a bit of loud giggling going on. Both babes had broad smiles on their faces when they emerged so not quite sure what was taking place!] However, one can snap pictures with a cell phone so Peter will take his along today and we hope to capture some more shots of these wonderful shrines.

Must away as we are going down to breakfast shortly. Fondestos to you and Lurch, from Cora Lee. She's in the shower as I scribe. Take care of yourself, Grog. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: The streets opposite the temple are lined with shops and this shows the owner carrying out a ritual paying hommage to Parvati, holding up a burning lamp and addressing each corner of the space. The Indian equivalent of Starbucks! One of the four entrances to the outer courtyards of the temple. One can enter here freely but the inner courtyards are restricted and one has to remove one's shoes before going in. The Sisterhood didn't want to use the facilities! Even our guide said it was pretty unpleasant, given that about 10,000 people visit the temple every day!

Home from buying two Kashmir carpets, I headed to the gym to ride the elliptical. Another pretty good workout. Logged 85 minutes to burn 1400 calories. Bit slower than yesterday as I think the earlier workout made my legs a tad heavy. Still pleased to have been able to use the machine.
