Indigo Bombay Blues: Thursday, November 19th!

Does feminist mean large unpleasant person who'll shout at you or someone who believes women are human beings? To me it's the latter, so I sign up. -Margaret Atwood, novelist and poet (b. 18 Nov 1939)

Day 23, Field Report:  Thursday, November 19th: Goa to Mumbai/Bombay!

Up at 7:00 am, having slept well. Up to shower and change, readying ourselves for another wonderful breakfast on the upper terrace. Going to miss the friendly, attentive staff and the wonderful meals. More like staying in a gorgeous mansion than in a hotel! Just heard Sunil drive up and give us a honk so must away.

Hi Gail and Jack! Thanks for the lovely card. Please pass along best wishes to Nora Norah and Laury. We are in Mumbai, (Bombay), at the moment. Just flew into this city of 22 million! Before that in Goa where the landscape is certainly quite different from one in card: palm trees, rice fields, with cows wandering the streets and roads, along with goats and many dogs. We stayed at a wonderful resort, Nilaya, in the hills, not far from many of the beach villages, where we were pampered with unbelievable meals. Last two days we met an American, Larry Black, an architect who has been working in Dubai for last 5 years. He is en route to Portland for Thanksgiving. His father was born on Vancouver Island and so he knows a bit about our Gulf Islands. He is hoping to start a boutique hotel on Saltspring Island so we told him we'd come and stay for free! Fondestos from Lady Darjeeling to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chloë et al!  After we checked into our hotel, Fariyas, we strolled the neighbouring streets for a couple of hours, stopping to have a bite to eat at a local restaurant. One side of the main drag we happened upon was lined with small stalls, selling everything from cheap trinkets to inexpensive clothes, shoes, etc. Much more "hustling" going on here than we have yet encountered, bit like the vendors in Mexico, per esempio, and certainly many more beggers, often mothers with small children. Fondestos from Nana/Lady Darjeeling to one and all. Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio! Pics: Alex Fraser crossing the Arabian Sea; tattoo world; peacock fans; dinner; street vendor

Dear Patrick It is very early in the morning, evening not sure for you. I always love Toronto and yesterday we met up with our dear friend Ruyun Staiger from Montreal for lunch. We went to the Canoe which is a wonderful restaurant on the 54th floor of the TD Centre what a view and a lovely and extravagant 3 hour lunch--thoroughly enjoyed it and caught-up with Ruyun she had come to Toronto to see her son who is doing a coop position as part of his Masters in Commerce with Sunlife Financial. She took train from Montreal and had a bit of a break and wanted to attend the TD Canadian Children's Book Awards Gala last night.

Colin, Ruyun and I attended the TD Canadian Children's Book Awards Gala at the Carlu and it was wonderful!  Shelagh Rogers was the MC and she was excellent-- so eloquent and such a great MC.  For me it was time to catch up with so many people--writers, illustrators, publishers, and librarians.  Barbara Reid, Marie Louise Gay, Edward Wallace, Linda Granfield, Kathy Kacer all were charming and enjoyable. Hugh Brewster's Vimy book was nominated for the Fleck Award as well as for the big prize.  Eric Walters actually attended his picture book Hope Springs was nominated for an award.  Shar Levine a good friend from Vancouver is on the board and she looked stunning--amazing shoes and dress.  Brenda Halliday, Jeff Canton, Larry Schwartz, Karen Boersma and many others were in attendance.  Impressive gathering as usual.

Anyways so much to share but the highlight of the evening for me was to meet Adrienne Hughes,  Monica Hughes daughter who awards the Monica Hughes Science Fiction and Fantasy Award.  I was so pleased to meet her I wanted to let her know that back in 1978 when Monica (her mother)  had written her first science fiction book for kids I had had her come to Clover Bar Junior High to speak to my students.  Monica Hughes died in 2003 and I wanted her to know how much I liked her mom and her work and how wonderful it is that the award was named after her mom. As it turns out Adrienne lives in Victoria and I hope to meet up with her at some time in the future.  Next year the Canadian Children's Book Centre celebrates its 40th anniversary and with a little luck I think I would try to come again for it!

I had to email you while I was thinking about you--I know your trip is going very well. Thanks for the updates. I am going to meet up with Charlotte at the Book Centre later this afternoon. Will drop in to the Bata shoe museum later this evening to see what new displays they have. Colin has gone off exploring. Going to the ballet with my niece on Friday.  Looking forward to that. Not looking forward to going back to work on Monday.  Home Saturday evening. Please take care and much love for now. Jo-Anne

Patrick, I am so glad we are receiving your emails. Though long they are very interesting. The video of the chicken was a bit gruesome but that’s life. Sounds like you are having a wonderful trip. I am surprised there is any wine available in India - one of my concerns about travelling to India. Keep us on your email list. Cheers, Dawn
