Mysore Palace Blues: Tuesday, November 10th!

If it can be destroyed by the truth, it deserves to be destroyed by the truth. -Carl Sagan, astronomer and author (9 Nov 1934-1996)

Patrick James Dunn Wonderful sketches, as always, Bob! Greetings from Mysore! We'll soon be seeing Diwali up close ourselves, although the festival isn't celebrated as much here in the south, apparently. Having a stupendous time. More, much, much more later, if time allows! Fondestos from Cora Lee. Cheers!

Kurt Traugott Aaaaaah it's almost perfect here in Panama.... Just came back from Lagos Gatun.... Fishing , eating fish wine and great company.. Enjoy the warmth, humidity and sunshine. It feels just perfect... No wifi in the house as nobody remembers the password... So having a nice outing to the nearby coffee shops and sipping a latte, marry what

Patrick James Dunn We're closer to perfection here in Mysore, with all the temple gods and goddesses and even some local Indian wine to make everything blend together in karmic bliss! Fondestos from Cora Lee. Cheers!

Bob Altwein Wow, nice to hear from you Pat, and from Mysore (code for dosa heaven) of all places. Are you posting your travels on FB? Thanks for feedback on the sketching.

Patrick James Dunn I'm hoping to post snippets, from time to time, "time" being the operative word. We are having a grand time but if it's Tuesday it must be Mysore, if you catch my drift! Looking forward to four days in Goa where we will be on "vacation" from temple touring! The Sisterhood on the grounds of Mysore Palace yesterday afternoon! Must away to an early breakfast. Cheers!

Day 14, Field Report: Tuesday, November 9th, Mysore!

Up at 7:15 am when the alarm went off. First time, since we’ve been on the road, that I’ve not been up before it went off. Made myself my Instanto and Lady Mary a cup of English Breakfast before we had quick showers and then downstairs for a another fabulous breakfast: half tomatoes

Met our guide, Ramesh, introduced to us by Ashok, in the hotel lobby as he would be with us today. Sunil came to collect us and we set off

Auto rickshaw aka Three-Wheeled Cab tuk-tuk/took-took onomatopoeia

Keshava Temple, stupendous

Simply gorgeous landscape, rice paddies and corn/cane fields, (Baccardi has a distillery here.), dotted with coconut palms, as well as a few pine plantations, grown for wood to be used in furniture making. Small lakes filled with lotus flowers. Lady-fingers, aka okra, dotted with small hill outcroppings, jasmine plantings, beetle nut, rose bushes for the flower

Unexpected stop at a small, local sugar cane processing farm, from bullock cqrt delivery of cane to crushing of stalks in a three cog machine to the boiling of the resulting juice to the final crystallized sugar, jaggery

Crossing the Kaveri River, sacred, past a small, gold-plated temple, dedicated to Pavarti.

Stopped at a small chikoo stand, the ball-shaped fruit looks like a small, spherical russet potatoe, its brownish flesh tastes quite sweet with a slight hint of cinnamon, at least according to Jugos Dom Pedro. We bought a few and Ramesh picked up a papaya that weighed 2.5 kilos! I thought that they were giant acorn squash when I first saw them, the colour and shape were so similar.

Stuck in a traffic jam outside the Summer Palace, due to the celebration of the birthday of the Tiger of Mysore
